Most business websites don't fail dramatically. They fail quietly: visitors arrive, glance around and leave without calling or filling in a form. Here are the seven issues we find most often when auditing sites, and what to do about them.

1. It's slow on mobile

Most visitors now arrive on a phone, often on patchy mobile data. Heavy images, bloated page builders and too many plugins make pages crawl. Check your site in Google's PageSpeed Insights and aim for fast load times on mobile, not just desktop.

2. It's unclear what you do

Visitors should understand what you do, who it's for and where you work within a few seconds of landing. Clever slogans are no substitute for a clear headline such as “Commercial cleaning for offices across Manchester”.

3. There's no obvious next step

Every page needs a clear call to action: call, book, request a quote. Put it near the top, repeat it lower down and make phone numbers tappable on mobile.

4. Forms ask too much

Long forms put people off. Ask only for what you need to respond: name, contact details and a short message. You can gather the rest on the first call.

5. There's no proof

Prospects want evidence that you're trustworthy. Show genuine reviews, recognisable clients, accreditations, before-and-after photos and clear company details such as your registered address and company number.

6. Service pages are thin

One “Services” page listing everything won't rank or convert. Each main service deserves its own page explaining what's included, who it's for, how it works and answers to common questions. This helps both search engines and buyers.

7. Nobody measures anything

Without analytics and conversion tracking, you can't tell which pages or channels bring enquiries. Set up Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, track form submissions and calls, and review the numbers monthly.

A website should be judged by the enquiries it produces, not just by how it looks.

Where to start

Fix speed and clarity first, because they affect every visitor. Then improve calls to action and proof, and build out your service pages over time.
